At Trieven Kennel, our pups are born and raised on our 2,500-acre Game Bird Ranch in Wyoming. We are able to hunt on the Ranch from August through March. Our Labs are continually exposed to birds and hunting, which gives us a chance to pick only the best for our upland and waterfowl breeding program. Our dogs have won many trophies, ribbons, and titles in AKC Field Trials and Hunt Tests.

We are the only Labrador kennel in the nation breeding pointing Labs who have also bred Field Champions, Amatuer Field Champions, and National Champions. We have personally trained and owned dogs with over 25 AKC Field Champion, Amatuer Field Champion and other Field titles. We have three dogs in the Retriever Field Trial Hall of Fame, owned and bred. You simply won’t find another breeder of quality pointing Labs with this background anywhere!

We are proud to show you the pedigrees on all of our pups. From the past comes the future. The “games” are fun...but the proof is in the HUNT, and our dogs are HUNTED! It is a fact that many of the “game” dogs (FT, Hunt Test, etc.) aren’t really hunted, especially on upland birds. Some bloodlines, such as some of the British lines, have been bred to be primarily non-slip land retrievers, and may not quarter and work birds as they are used here in the U.S. We are concentrating on what the breed was developed for in this country: tireless, eager upland hunters and cold water retrievers. We don’t want a dog that is worn out after an hour in the field. Our Labs are hunted all season long on both upland birds and waterfowl. They have been proven in competition and now excel as working gundogs and family companions. Our dogs are winners in the hunting field, where it really counts!

The Source for Pointing Labs

If you are checking out pointing Labs, there are quite a few good kennels out there. Check their pedigrees, nearly ALL go back to Trieven blood. Tiger Mountain’s program includes quite a bit of TWIST blood. If you go to their website, the dogs LUKE and WHITEFOOT are direct offspring of Twist, and a strong influence in their bloodline. Black Forest, another excellent kennel, has GMPR GUMBO OF BLACK FOREST and GMPR CAJUN OF BLACK FOREST, both bred by Trieven Kennels. TWIST & SHOUT was a strong influence in many pointing Lab programs, as are AFC TRIEVEN CLASSICAL JAZZ MH (sire of FC/AFC JAZZTIME) and FC/AFC TRIEVEN THUNDERHEAD.

FC/AFC/CFC Trieven Thunderhead, our foundation sire, had 37 Derby Points, won two Qualifying stakes by 20 months, placed in two Amateur All Age stakes, and Jammed an Open by 23 months.

We are the ONLY Kennel in the Nation breeding pointing Labradors who have also bred Field Champions, Amateur Field Champions, and National Champions. To our knowledge, we are the only people breeding pointing Labs who have personally trained and owned dogs with over 25 AKC Field Trial and Amateur Field Champion and Hunt Test titles. All of our competitive Field Trial dogs were mostly amatuer trained and handled, with some help from the great Jim Gonia, his father Roy, and John Folsom (Hightest Kennels). All of our Field Trial dogs were always hunted on both upland birds and waterfowl.

In fact, our first "pointing" Lab was our home-bred FC/AFC Trieven Classic (National finalist and Doubleheader winner), dam of Classical Jazz, and maternal great-granddam of AFC Twist & Shout MH. Classic was born in 1971, giving us 35 years with Labs that point! We are the only active Retriever kennel in the Nation with three retrievers of two breeds in the Retriever Field Trial Hall of Fame. We know of no other breeder of pointing Labs with this strong background in competitive Field Trial retrievers, as well as top notch gun dogs.
